Looking Back Over Six Months

The May through October 2021 six month period has been quite a wild ride for the U.S. in terms of COVID-19 infections.

Infection Level started just over 200 before sliding down to around 50 in early July. It seemed that we were almost done with COVID. But then Delta struck and the Infection Level jumped up to 700 over the course of a month. Vaccinations slowed even with the increased infections. But eventually, things peaked in September and started back down again. The six month period ended just over 300. But the rate of decrease is slowing.

Over the entire six months, the national average Infection Level was 310. Among the 50 states and DC, there was a wide range of average Infection Level.

The graph above shows that on the average, the Infection Level in Utah, for example, was 338.9 per 100,000 or about 1/3% of the population was infected.

Perhaps it would be a little easier to visualize if we show the total number of new infections for each state over the six month period per 100,000.

So, again looking at Utah, the total new cases were 4658 per 100,000 which means that 4.658% of the population of Utah was reported to have contracted COVID in that six month time period!

Treatments for COVID have improved dramatically since early 2020. During this six month period, deaths from COVID were reported to be 1.25% of new COVID infections. In addition to the variation in infections, there was also a state by state variation in the mortality from COVID. In Oklahoma, the raw mortality rate was 61% higher than the national average, while in D.C. it was 59% lower.

Combining infection level and raw mortality rate, we get the rate of COVID deaths per 100,000 for six months. The U.S. average was 51.1 per 100,000.

Again, looking at Utah, the rate there was 30.7 per 100,000 people which is significantly better than the national average of 51.1. Right next door in Nevada, the rate was more than twice as high at 69.7 deaths per 100,000.

This is the last report for us.
